Apple has pledged $8 million towards earthquake relief in Ya’an, according to an official statement on its Chinese website. The company has also offered its “deepest condolences” in the wake of the disaster, which hit Ya’an on Saturday. The quake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale, and has killed at least 186 people, injuring over 11,000, according to state media.

Other companies are also getting involved in charity efforts, such as Samsung, which has pledged $9.63 million. One distinguishing trait of Apple’s contribution is that it has promised to supply new devices to affected schools, and put its workers in the area on standby to help.

Ya’an is just 72 miles from Chengdu, where Apple suppliers including Foxconn have operations. There is also a lone Apple Store in the region, based in Ventiane City.
