Amazon has signed a deal with Miramax under which it will offer hundreds of library titles to subscribers of Internet retailer’s Prime Instant Video service. The deal does not make Miramax titles exclusive to Amazon and the exact financial terms were not disclosed.
In May 2011, Miramax struck a multiyear deal with streaming-subscription leader Netflix covering several hundred films from the studio’s catalog available on a rotating basis. Titles now available on Amazon Prime Instant include “Pulp Fiction,” “Good Will Hunting,” “Life Is Beautiful,” ”The English Patient,” ”Kill Bill,” “Amélie,” “Reservoir Dogs” and “Trainspotting.”
For Miramax, the deal is part of its ongoing strategy of milking the library rather than developing new content. Last year, Amazon’s LoveFilm video streaming service inked deal with Miramax covering the U.K. and Germany.
Amazon — which is competing aggressively with Netflix in bulking up its selection — offers more than 41,000 movies and TV shows to members of its Prime free-shipping program, which costs $79 per year. Videos are available across an array of devices, including Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets.
