Vine Now at 40M Users – Grows by 23 Million Since June

Twitter has revealed that its short video service Vine has managed to gain its 40 millionth user. The user number milestone has been achieved despite new competition from well-established Instagram, and comes at the same time as it updates the Android version of its app with a number of bug fixes and the autocompletion of hashtags.

Vine launched its service in January of this year, three months after Twitter acquired the company. The initial launch on iOS saw it reach 13 million active users by June, when it launched the Android version of the app. Though Instagram added video recording to its own app later that month, it does not seem to have stopped Vine from growing. The Wall Street Journal notes that the 40 million figure is just registration numbers, and does not reveal how many are actively using the service. In contrast, Facebook revealed in June that 130 million people use Instagram once a month, though it is not clear if this is for just video content or the app as a whole.

The new Vine Android app, downloadable on Google Play, adds in the autocompletion of hashtags in text fields, along with @mentions in comments and video posts.
