Monsters UniversityGoing back to school has proved to be a big money maker for Disney-Pixar’sMonsters University,” which has crossed $700 million at the worldwide box office, making it the fourth-highest grossing animated feature for Pixar.

“Monsters University” — behind “Toy Story 3,” with $1.06 billion, “Finding Nemo” ($922 million) and “Up” ($731 million) — also is expected to become the studio’s highest-grossing animated film in China, with roughly $19.1 million locally. In total, “Monsters, Inc.” made $563 million globally.

The summer box office was buoyed by top-performing family fare “Monsters U” and “Despicable Me 2,” which so far has amassed more than $805 million globally. (Interestingly, that film was denied release in China.)

“Iron Man 3,” which earned $1.21 billion worldwide, and “Fast and Furious 6,” with $787 million, are the summer’s other top-grossing movies.

“Monsters University” has some gas left in the tank internationally, as Disney plans to release the film in South Korea on Sept. 12. The film is being released Oct. 29 on home video.
