On Thursday, reports emerged that a GameStop branch in Italy is cancelling the pre-orders of the Wii U version of Watch Dogs. This alone does not confirm the version has been abandoned. The customer was informed that Ubisoft had cancelled the game, and was advised to pre-order a different game instead.
According to Wiitalia, a number of other GameStop branches in Italy provided the same response – a pre-order for the Wii U version was unavailable because Ubisoft had cancelled it.
Japanese gamer pub Kotaku, citing a ‘reliable source’, is also reporting that the US arm of GameStop is canceling pre-orders on the Wii U version of Watch Dogs. At the time of writing, GameStop was still accepting new pre-orders on the game both in-store and via its website.
In a previous interview with CVG, Watch Dogs’ creative director Jonathan Morin said the Wii U version looked superior to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
“I would say the Wii U version is pretty much in between what the current gen is and what the next gen is from a version standpoint,” Morin told us at the time.
“It’s hard to position it. I would tend to say it’s maybe a bit closer to current gen than next gen for certain things but it’s a beautiful game on Wii U and it’s cool to play it just on the GamePad.”
Ubisoft has not made any comments to indicate Watchdogs current development status.
