Meryl Streep has taken a “small but important” role as British suffragette movement leader Emmeline Pankhurst opposite Carey Mulligan in the upcoming Suffragette from Pathe Films and Film4, Screen Daily reports. The script for the drama hails from Abi Morgan, who wrote The Iron Lady, featuring Streep in the lead.
To be directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane), Suffragette stars Mulligan as Maude, described as being a “foot soldier” of the early 20th century movement.
Streep recently starred in August: Osage County, which earned her a still-pending Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress (her 18th Oscar nomination).
Ruby Films’ Faye Ward and Alison Owen will produce alongside Film4’s Katherine Butler and Tessa Ross with Pathe’s Cameron McCracken executive producing. The film will begin to shoot on Monday, February 24.
