After being cancelled by the BBC in December, period cop drama “Ripper Street” has been given new life thanks to Amazon. The streaming service has commissioned a third season of the Matthew Macfadyen series focusing on a group of detectives trying to keep the peace in post-Jack the Ripper London. Filming is set to begin in May 2014.
The series will continue to be co-produced by BBC America and will air on the network here in the states, but in the U.K. the episodes will first air on Amazon Prime Instant Video before screening on BBC One a few months later. The second season of “Ripper Street” premiered on BBC America on February 22nd. The eight-episode second season will be shown Saturday nights at 9pm on BBC America.
Amazon is following in the steps of fellow streaming service Netflix in bringing back a show that was canceled for another season — in addition to bringing back “Arrested Development” years after it was canceled by Fox, Netflix also has a fourth and final episode of “The Killing” in the works following the crime dramas cancellation by AMC.
