The USB Implementer’s Forum recently released the first images of the new Type-C reversible USB connector that is planned to replace micro-USB.
While similar in size to a current micro-USB connector, the new plug can be inserted either way, much like Apple’s Lightning connector. The new connector will also support faster data transfer – up to 10 Gbps – in the form of SuperSpeed USB 3.1. It also provides increased power for charging using extended 5-volt current ranges and up to 100 watts with USB Power Delivery standard.
The standard is expected to be finalized by July and should appear in devices by the end of 2014.
