Square Launches New Ordering App to Replace Wallet

Square today is starting anew with its attempts to make paying for items at small businesses easier.

To start, Square is discontinuing the Square Wallet app for both Android and iOS devices. Though it will support those consumers who’ve already downloaded Square Wallet, the app is no longer available to new customers.

In its place, Square launched Order, an app that can be used to place and pay for to-go or pickup orders ahead of time. Square’s hope is that once people learn they can avoid waiting in line at their favorite small businesses, they’ll use the app to pay for more items.

Square Order is severely limited at launch, available in only a handful of locations in New York City and San Francisco. Square hopes the number of small businesses supporting Square Order will grow quickly, as it believes it adds value to its other goods and services.

Square’s main product is the Square credit card reader. Square lets any iPad or iPhone accept credit card payments with low fees for the business making use of the reader.
