An incident at an LG factory used for LCD production in South Korea earlier today has resulted in the deaths of workers, it has been announced. Two employees of an LG contractor were killed in the incident, which involved the accidental venting of nitrogen at the P9 facility in Paju, and four other employees are also said to have been injured, with at least one in a serious condition.
Firefighters speaking to the Korea Herald advised the employees were performing routine maintenance at the factory, and it is believed the valve on a nitrogen gas cylinder was left open by mistake. Though not confirmed, it is possible the workers were asphyxiated by the lack of oxygen in the air, caused by the venting. Police and firefighters are still at the facility, investigating what caused the accident.
LG offered an apology to the victims of the accident within hours of it taking place. “We send our most heartfelt condolences and apologies to the deceased and will do everything in our power to help the injured recover as quickly as possible,” a statement from the company reads, adding that it would cooperate with authorities to discover what exactly caused the nitrogen release.
According to the report, a similar nitrogen accident took place last month at a nuclear reactor in Ulsan, South Korea, causing the deaths of three workers.
