2015 will be a big year of new content for Netflix, with both Kyle Chandler’s Bloodline and the streaming site’s first ever Marvel series, Daredevil debuting, but before either of them will be the premiere of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a new comedy from the 30 Rock duo of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
The series, which was originally planned to air on NBC but, in a last minute switch, was sold to Netflix, stars Ellie Kemper (The Office) as the titular Kimmy Schmidt, who escapes a doomsday cult after 15 years and tries to start her life over in New York City. Today, Netflix released the first official trailer for the show.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to debut Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt exclusively on Netflix, which has proven to be such an outstanding place for distinctive, original programming,” Fey and Carlock said in a statement when the move from NBC to Netflix was announced. “Happily, we will still collaborate with our longtime partners at Universal Television to fulfill Netflix’s two-season order. We grew up at NBC and will continue to develop broadcast projects with them as well. We found the inspiration for this series in Ellie Kemper’s shining all-American face, and we know that she and Kimmy Schmidt have found their best possible home at Netflix.”
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s cast also includes Jane Krakowski, Carol Kane, and Titus Burgess. Burgess will play Kimmy’s new roommate, while Krakowski’s character will be Kimmy’s new boss.
