A judge has ordered Typo, maker of an attachable iPhone keyboard, to pay BlackBerry $860,000 for violating a sales injunction regarding its original product.
Typo debuted a physical QWERTY keyboard for the iPhone in early 2014. BlackBerry sued the company swiftly for patent infringement. Typo was eventually hit with an injunction barring it from selling the infringing keyboard in the U.S. Apparently it continued to sell them anyway, which resulted in today’s fine. After the fallout of the lawsuit, Typo was forced to redesign the Typo keyboard.
It released the second device, Typo 2, in January of this year. Like the original, the Typo 2 fits onto the bottom of an iPhone 6 and uses Bluetooth to connect. The idea is to give iPhone users a physical keyboard on which to type rather than the glass screen.
Ryan Seacrest, of American Idol fame, invested heavily in the company.
