During the game, you’ll need to draw lines on the touch screen with your stylus to create “rainbow ropes” that will help Kirby navigate obstacles and defeat his enemies.

“The Rainbow Ropes will guide Kirby in the direction players want him to go, and drawing ropes in creative ways like a loop will even give Kirby a quick speed boost,” Nintendo said. “Strategy not only comes into play in guiding Kirby, but also in the amount of Rainbow Ink used, as drawing Rainbow Ropes uses precious ink.”

Instead of being able to copy other character’s special moves, like Kirby can do in other games, the pink protagonist can now “transform into powerful vehicles” — such as a tank, submarine, or rocket. As a tank, for instance, he will be able to move automatically and shoot at enemies.

Up to three of your friends can jump in and out at any time using Wii Remote controllers to play as Waddle Dees and give Kirby a hand. And for an extra leg-up, you can use the compatible Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight amiibo figures once per day, per stage, to gain some special abilities. The amiibo figures are sold separately for $12.99 each.

Nintendo said that Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is the first game in a lineup of titles it has planned for the Wii U this year.

“In the first half of the year alone, Wii U owners will be able to adventure with Kirby, party down with Mario and his friends in Mario Party 10, build levels in the Nintendo eShop-exclusive Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars and experience Nintendo’s newest IP with the action-packed Splat oon,” Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, said in a statement.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is available in the Nintendo eShop and at Nintendo.com for $39.99.
