Google was unable to convince a judge to dismiss a potential class action lawsuit concerning its Google Wallet application and service.
A consumer sued Google in late 2013 alleging the company violated its own privacy policies by providing third-party app developers with consumer information, including street addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Lead plaintiff, Alice Svenson of Illinois, claims this practice raised the risk of identity theft.
Though Google ceased the practice after the lawsuit was filed a year and a half ago, the plaintiff is seeking class action status, $1,000 per violation, and other punitive damages.
Google Wallet has been around since 2011 and lets users store credit, debit, and loyalty cards on their phone in addition to make tap-and-go payments at participating retailers.
Google didn’t comment on the judge’s decision.
