DJI’s latest drone launch is a flying machine capable of recording 4K-resolution while in the air. The Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced are drones equipped with stabilized cameras, allowing it to be used for various aerial filming situations, with each able to travel at a range of up to 1.2 miles from the user over DJI Lightbridge, while also maintaining a live HD video feed for the pilot.
The Professional edition can record 4K video at up to 30fps, while the Advanced goes up to 1080p video at 60fps. Both use a three-axis gimbal system for mounting the camera and keeping it stable throughout the flight, with both versions of the camera using a 1/2.3-inch sensor with a 94-percent field of view lens and are able to shoot 12-megapixel still images.
Piloted by remote controllers, with assistance from the DJI Pilot app, the drones include automated take-off and landing, as well as GPS and GLONASS support for outdoor use, with an estimated flight time of 23 minutes. Indoors, the position can also be maintained without GPS using DJI’s Visual Positioning System, effectively a downwards-facing camera that can track changes in the picture and alter its flight to counter them.
The Phantom 3 Professional costs $1,260, or $1,360 with an extra battery, while the Phantom 3 Advanced is priced at $1,000 on its own, $1,100 with the secondary battery. DJI is hoping to start shipping orders for both drones from later this month.
