Apple has posted a new repair program for owners of the iPhone 6 Plus that will replace the device’s iSight (rear) camera free of charge for up to three years after the phone was purchased, regardless of warranty status. Apple said it had determined that “a small percentage” of iPhone 6 models sold primarily between September of 2014 and January of 2015 have a component in them that could fail, causing photos to look blurry.

If a user’s iPhone 6 Plus is producing blurry photos and falls within the eligible serial number range, Apple will replace the device’s iSight camera at no charge. The company has set up a web page providing details of the program and allowing users to check their serial number for eligibility. The flaw does not apply to the iPhone 6, but Plus owners who believe they qualify for the repair program can bring the unit to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, an Apple Store, or contact Apple Technical Support to arrange shipping or other options.

Apple advises users to back up their iPhone 6 Plus prior to turning it over for repair using either iTunes or iCloud. If the screen is cracked on the unit, that issue will also be repaired at normal repair rates (depending on the warranty status of the unit) prior to the free camera repair taking place. The program for the camera flaw is in force for up to three years after original purchase, regardless of normal warranty status.
