After its first year of service, streaming music site Tidal has announced that it has reached three million paid subscribers — a figure far below the last known numbers from rivals Apple Music and Spotify.
Apple’s streaming service, which kicked off nine months ago but only began charging users a $10 per month fee for access to its multi-million-song streaming library last September, was last reported in January to have 12 million paid users, with an apparent growth rate of around 1M per month.
Spotify reports it has around 30 million subscribers as of March, but has been in operation for eight years. Tidal, uniquely, offers a $20-per-month lossless audio stream option.
