There has been a schedule shift today for the future of Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ cinematic Kaijuniverse as Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla 2, originally planned for release on June 8, 2018, will now arrive nine months later on March 22, 2019. Godzilla vs Kong will then follow on May 29, 2020. The latter film was always intended for a 2020 release and it is now the first major release to claim that date. In fact, the only other film currently dated for May 2020 is a mystery Marvel Studios project set to arrive May 1. Godzilla 2 will open opposite Paramount Pictures‘ animated feature, Amusement Park. The move also gets Godzilla 2 out of the path of a sixth Tranformers feature, believed to be the planned Bumblebee spinoff.
Moviegoers will next have an opportunity to visit the cinematic world of Godzilla and Kong with the March 10, 2017 release of director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island. 2018 won’t be entirely without giant monsters, too, as Legendary and Universal Pictures‘ Pacific Rim 2 is slated to arrive in theaters December 31, 2018.
Warner Bros. also slightly shifted the release of one of their mystery DC Comics feature films. Originally set for release on June 19, 2020 (the same date as a mystery Pixar release), the DC film will now arrive in theaters July 24, 2020. It has been highly speculated that the DC project in question is Green Lantern Corps, but that has not been officially confirmed by the studio at this time.
One final addition to the upcoming Warner Bros. schedule places a mystery event film for release on December 25, 2018. There is currently a mystery live-action Disney film set for release that same day.
