A24 announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake. Mitchell is set to direct his original script, which is the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed film It Follows. Production is set to start end of summer with A24 and Insiders handling domestic and international distribution respectively.
Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Social Network) is attached to star. Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Moneyball, 50 Shades of Grey trilogy) is producing under his Michael De Luca Productions banner. Chris Bender and Jake Weiner (A History of Violence) and Adele Romanski (Black Rock) are producing as well. Lucy Kitada is overseeing for Michael De Luca Productions. “Silver Lake” is a modern day noir crime thriller set in Los Angeles.
David Robert Mitchell rose to prominence with It Follows, which premiered in 2014 at the Cannes Film Festival to critical praise. It was one of 2015’s break-out independent hits around the world. His first feature, The Myth of the American Sleepover, premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, winning a Special Jury Prize and premiered internationally at Cannes Critics’ Week.
A BAFTA-winner, and a Golden Globe nominee, Andrew Garfield most recently starred in 99 Homes. He will next be seen in Silence and Hacksaw Ridge. Past screen projects include Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus; Spike Jonze’s robot love story I’m Here; Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs; Revolution Films’ Red Riding Trilogy – 1974, directed by Julian Jarrold; and John Crowley’s Boy A, for which he earned the Best Actor BAFTA in 2008. In 2012, he made his Broadway debut in a Tony-nominated turn in the revival of Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Death of a Salesman,” directed by Mike Nichols.
