As part of a new deal with A+E Networks, Hulu has acquired the exclusive subscription streaming rights to History’s well-received Roots remake.
“We’re so proud to welcome such a culturally important and highly-rated series… to Hulu,” said the streaming service’s head of content, Craig Erwich, in a statement. Roots’ Memorial Day premiere drew 5.3 million total viewers, making it the No. 1 mini premiere on cable since A+E’s Bonnie & Clyde three years earlier.
In addition to Roots, which will become available to stream in the fall, the expanded Hulu/A+E agreement includes the rights to Lifetime’s War and Peace (available on Hulu this summer) and History’s Barbarians Rising (available in 2017).
The streaming service and cable network laid the groundwork for the new pact last year by sealing a deal that granted Hulu the exclusive SVOD rights to all past episodes of Lifetime’s UnREAL.
Update
Hulu asked us to clarify that UnReal was already available on Hulu, our original headline made the fact misleading.
