LeEco Planning Big Fall Launch in U.S.

Chinese technology firm and phone maker LeEco is in the midst of a hiring spree in the U.S., preparing to a make a big splash in the U.S. market in the fall, according to Todd Witkemper, LeEco Director of PR.

The company plans to bring both phones and a video streaming service to the U.S. The company already offers streaming services with Chinese and Indian content, and phones for the global market.

Its U.S. products will be distinct, targeted specifically at U.S. millennials. The company is currently negotiating with rights holders for U.S. video content — both recorded and live — to offer via its service, which will be featured in the interface of its phones. The phones will also support other, more established streaming services. The phones will be sold on the unlocked market.

The company already has well over 400 U.S.-based employees, and aims to have 1,000 by the end of the year, spread across four west-coast locations. The company was previously known as LeTV, and made a splash with its Max Pro phone at CES, the first phone with the Snapdragon 820 processor. The company originally planned to bring the Max Pro to the U.S. early in 2016, but has refocused on this new strategy led by its U.S. team.
