Marvel Comics has unveiled a first look at its next Avengers team — and they certainly have the red, white and blue thing going for them.
Called the U.S.Avengers, the new team will apparently play a key role in the eventual fallout from the ongoing Civil War II event. The team will spin out of Roberto Da Costa’s new-look A.I.M., and be positioned to replace S.H.I.E.L.D. after the spy organization loses America’s trust. In an interview with The Washington Post, writer Al Ewing said the story was a great chance to dig deeper into Da Costa’s motivations as a character. Check out an excerpt below:
“He came to America in his teens, and, as both an actual and fictional minority, a South American mutant, he’s experienced the ugly side of it. But he’s seen the best of America, too. He has an absolute love for his adopted country, and he’ll fight to the end to save lives and help people.”
The team will feature an all-new Iron Patriot, Thunderbolt Ross the Red Hulk, Cannonball, unbeatable Squirrel Girl (and her squirrel legion) and Da Costa. It’s an interesting mix, and if nothing else, it should be interesting to see how all these characters mesh. Plus, hey, a new Iron Patriot.
