Earlier this summer, Marvel Comics announced they would be following up their New Avengers run with a brand-new comic called U.S.Avengers. The series would follow Roberto Da Costa as he and some very familiar faces trade in their global do-goods for foreign territory. And, now, it looks like Marvel is making variant covers for the comic to celebrate each state in the U.S.

In an exclusive grab, Buzzfeed shared some photos of U.S.Avengers #1 which feature heroes like Captain America, Black Widow, and more. For instance, Steve Rogers is labeled the Avenger of Delaware while Luke Cage cover New York. Iron Man watches over sunny California, and The Winter Soldier keeps Indiana safe for any harm.

When the comic premieres next year, a full line-up of fifty variants will be published for each state. These covers all had their artwork done by Rod Reis, and since the artist is so considerate, comic book fans in Canada and Puerto Rico will also get exclusive variants. Of course, not all of these heroes are part of the U.S.Avengers. The team is still led by Roberto Da Costa who is better known by his mutant moniker Sunspot. He teams up with characters like Cannonball, Squirrel Girl, Pod, Red Hulk, Dr. Toni Ho (Iron Patriot), and Danielle Cage (Captain America) to take on threats.

Al Ewing will write the series while Paco Medina provides art. When U.S.Avengers was announced, Ewing said their assembled team members were chosen carefully.

“We wanted a couple of members that’d speak to the U.S. in the title — hence super-scientist and supporting player Dr. Toni Ho stepping up to the main team as the new Iron Patriot, and General Ross waiting in the wings as the Red Hulk,” Ewing said.

As for Danielle Cage, the writer said she’s a time-traveling version of Captain America from “about thirty years in the future” and is chasing “an enemy from her time. That villain is Golden Skill, a character trying to alter the past to secure his future as all baddies tend to do.

Ewing said he hopes to explore themes of patriotism in U.S.Avengers but understands that the team’s line-up is going to cause lots of internal friction.

The new series will debut in January as part of Marvel NOW! to conclude Civil War II as the special crossover has been delayed. U.S.Avengers will roll out with other new titles like Death of X, Gamora, Iron Fists, The Unstoppable Wasp, and more.
