El Rey Network announced the launch of “The People’s Network Showcase: Horror Edition,” hosted by the master of horror himself John Carpenter, and featuring 10 short horror films submitted by rising independent filmmakers. The showcase will debut on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 8pm ET, with an encore airing at 10pm ET. It will air as part of El Rey’s month-long celebration of Horror, a program they’re dubbing “Blood, Sweat and Fears.”
“When I started El Rey I wanted the network to provide a new pipeline for creators. My roots are in independent filmmaking and I believe in providing opportunities to people working outside of the studio system,” said El Rey Network founder and Chairman Robert Rodriguez. “We’ve discovered these terrific short films by very talented makers and with this on-air special hosted by my friend John Carpenter, we can help get them noticed.”
“Whether for digital or linear, programming is no longer dictated from the top down. Audiences today know what they want, and in many cases are able to make it themselves,” said El Rey Network President and G.M. Daniel Tibbets. “The People’s Network is our disruptive tool to demolish the wall between Professional and User Generated Content.”
“The People’s Network” celebrates filmmakers and artists from diverse cultures by giving them a platform to showcase their work. The new on-air series will feature interviews with the filmmakers and special vignettes of current working industry professionals who share the behind the scenes secrets of their craft to inspire future creators. Each collection of films that airs will be curated by genre or central story theme.
