Hulu’s just announced partnership that adds Newsy to its lineup. Newsy is best known for its short-form news videos, aimed at millennials. The name is meant to evoke “News with a ‘why’” – hence “Newsy.”
According to the company’s press release:
Hulu’s nearly 12 million subscribers have access to Newsy’s daily news reporting through on-demand videos covering world and national news, policy, culture, science and technology. In addition to 30 news stories each day, Newsy will publish longer-form content — including its popular original series “Americanize Me” and “My First President” — to Hulu. All clips and stories are available to stream through Hulu’s No Commercials and Limited Commercials subscription plans.
This could be a substantial differentiator for Hulu as it tries to stand out as a subscription video service. Its competitors, primarily Netflix and Amazon Prime, don’t offer current news. Netflix has been on a buying spree of late, and it has bulked up on documentaries. Newsy’s commitment to producing long-form work could fit in nicely, giving Hulu some more heft.
