CBS has revealed two more additions to the Star Trek: Discovery series. Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth) will star as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe, while Anthony Rapp (Rent) will star as “Lt. Stamets,” an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. The character is presumably named for real life fungus expert Paul Stamets.
The Star Trek: Discovery cast update (which broke at 10:31am PST, a nod to the Discovery’s Starfleet registry NCC-1031) also reveals that Yeoh will be playing “Captain Georgiou,” the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou. “Shenzou” is a Chinese word meaning “Divine Craft” that has also been lent to China’s current space program. Eleven Shenzhou missions have launched since 1999, with a planned flight in 2018 set to make an even dozen.
Following its May 2017 premiere on the CBS Television Network, all episodes of Star Trek: Discovery will be available in the U.S. exclusively on CBS All Access. Continuing the worldwide appeal of the franchise, each episode of the series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere, presented on Netflix in 188 countries and through Bell Media platforms in Canada.
Star Trek: Discovery is executive produced by Bryan Fuller with Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts and Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman manning the bridge.
