Today DC Comics announced “Wonder Woman Day,” a new, worldwide promotional event designed to tie into the release of the Wonder Woman movie this June.
Fans will be able to pick up two free comics at any participating retailers – Wonder Woman Day Special Edition #1 (featuring a reprint of 2016’s Wonder Woman #1 by Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp) and DC Super Hero Girls Wonder Woman Day Special Edition #1 (which features a chapter from the upcoming DC Super Hero Girls Vol. 3: Summer Olympus by Shea Fontana and Yancey Labat).
DC says that over 2,000 retailers will be participating in Wonder Woman Day, including both comic shops and retail chains like Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Walmart, Costco and Amazon. Certain retailers will be featuring special promotional events, as well as offering other freebies like Wonder Woman-themed tiaras and bracelets. Some of these events will feature appearances by popular comic creators, including Greg Rucka, Phil Jimenez, Cliff Chiang, Shea Fontana, Marc Andreyko, and Cat Staggs.
DC will be launching other promotions in the build-up to Wonder Woman Day. From May 29 through June 3, The “DC All Access” web series will feature video segments spotlighting classic Wonder Woman comics and interviews with various comic book creators about the legacy and history of the character. And finally, DC will kick off a sale on Wonder Woman digital comics beginning on May 30.
This isn’t the first time DC has created a holiday for one of their iconic heroes. The company has been celebrating “Batman Day” every September for the past several years.
