NBC has given a third-season renewal to comedy series The Good Place. The network has ordered 13 episodes for season three. Good Place creator Michael Schur established from the start that he wanted the series to have a shorter annual episode order than a traditional broadcast sitcom. The series resumes its second season on Jan. 4.

The Universal Television series, now midway through its sophomore year, has been a critical darling and a solid performer in the adults 18-49 demo for NBC in its Thursday timeslot. For the season to date, the series is pulling in a 2.0 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.2 million viewers in Nielsen’s live-plus-seven ratings. Season 1 averaged a 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 is currently at 100 percent.

Good Place stars Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, Manny Jacinto, and D’Arcy Carden. Bell plays Eleanor, a woman who dies only to awaken in the afterlife. She initially believes she has been accidentally sent to The Good Place, but discovered in the Season 1 finale that she and her new friends are in fact trapped in The Bad Place and that Danson’s Michael is in fact a demon assigned to torment them. Michael Schur, David Miner, Morgan Sackett and Drew Goddard are executive producers.
