Showtime will premiere its animated half-hour series Our Cartoon President, from Stephen Colbert and Chris Licht, on Feburary 11. The series’ launch airs at 8 PM ahead of the network’s Season 7 premiere of Homeland at 9 PM.
Not coincidentally, President Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address a few days earlier, on January 30, marking his first speech to the full Congress since his joint address in February.
Showtime will give viewers an early preview of the series on Sunday, January 28, making the first episode available across multiple platforms online and on demand a couple days before Trump’s SOTU. Showtime announced in July it had given a 10-episode order to the then-untitled satirical animated series deconstructing White House life under our 45th POTUS.
The series was inspired by the animated Donald Trump character on Colbert’s Late Show. Animated Trump also starred in the opening segment of Showtime’s Election Night special, Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Final: Who’s Going to Clean Up This Sh*t?
As described by Showtime, Our Cartoon President opens the White House doors for an “all access” look at a typical day in Trump’s world, examining quintessentially Trumpian details of the presidency and his most important relationships. It’s a world in which no one is safe, from close family and confidants to key political figures of both parties and members of the media, Showtime explained, for those who have been living under a flat rock the past year.
In September, Showtime announced it had tapped R.J. Fried as EP/showrunner. Fried’s credits include Late Show with David Letterman, Triumph’s Election Special 2016, Maya & Marty, Night of Too Many Stars, Onion Sportsdome, Popzilla and Rob & Big. He has written for Letterman, Colbert, Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien, Robert Smigel, Sacha Baron Cohen, Andy Richter and Bill Murray among others.
Tim Luecke, who co-created the Late Show version of Animated Trump, will serve as lead animator and co-executive producer. Matt Lappin will serve as consulting producer.
