Sony today announced the innovative NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder. The new NEX-VG10 is the world’s first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor.
The NEX-VG10 can capture full 1920×1080 high definition video in AVCHD format with rates up to 24Mbps. It also comes with an E-mount 18-200mm lens wiith 11x optical zoom optimized for video shooting.
Included with purchase as a download voucher is Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10, which is a $99 dollar value.
The NEX-VG10 Camcorder is equipped with the same Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor used in the NEX-5 and NEX-3 digital cameras and compatible with the high grade E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF. It is also compatible with the A-mount series of lenses used by Sony’s existing alpha DSLR camera lineup via a mount adapter.
Video and Stills
The unit comes with a Bionz processor which works with the Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor to give high resolution video and 14 megapixel still images. Approximately 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found in conventional camcorders, the APS HD CMOS sensor enables an extremely shallow depth of field. This allows videographers to achieve cinematic results with stunning background defocus .
Audio
The NEX-VG10 is primed for serious audio capture, thanks to a cluster of four directional microphones on the top of it, as well as a proprietary hot shoe and standard cold shoe under a door on the camcorder’s handle. In addition to a flip-out 3-inch LCD viewfinder, the NEX-VG10 has an eye-level EVF that swivels vertically, and the camcorder saves footage to a single card slot that accepts both Memory Stick and SDHC/SDXC cards.
Price and Availability
The NEX-VG10 will be available in September for about $2,000 and presales on www.sonystyle.com will begin July 14. They will also be available at Sony Style retail stores and at authorized dealers nationwide.
The price and range of features should entice a lot of filmmakers on budget to give this unit a spin.
