The July 4th holiday on Wednesday proved a profitable one for cinema with the U.S. domestic box-office for the holiday reaching its highest level in five years and up by 29% from last year.

Fuelled by the likes of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with $11.5 million, Incredibles 2 with $9.6 million and the just-opened The First Purge with $9.3 million, around $43.5 million in tickets in total were bought – the biggest since 2013 when Despicable Me 2 was in cinemas.

Things are set to continue looking rosy too with Ant-Man and the Wasp pull ing in $11.5 million in Thursday night previews – putting it well above the likes of Doctor Strange ($9.4M), Wonder Woman ($11M) and Guardians of the Galaxy ($11.2M). That suggests it will beat out the $75-85 million opening weekend estimates is has been tracking for in the past few weeks.
