Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle director Jake Kasdan appeared at the ABC party for the Television Critics Association this week and spoke about the proposed follow-up feature in the works – the third film overall in the Jumanji series, which he’s currently writing.
Speaking with Slashfilm, he confirmed Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan are slated to return as the in-game avatars, but they’re still figuring out if it’ll be the same kids from the first film or new ones. He also indicates the franchise will stick with the video game idea for now and be heavily tied to the 2017 film:
“Our hope is to keep a long continuity through the whole thing, even though the story that we’re telling in the second movie, the movie that we’re working on right now is much more connected to the first movie that I made a year ago than it is to the original. We love the idea of keeping all of this together and connected in some way or another.”
Kasdan is still aiming for a Christmas 2019 release but won’t know that for sure for a few months yet.
