Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) will discontinue sales of its full-electric Smart brand in the U.S. and Canada.
The move was blamed a “declining micro-car market” in the U.S. and Canada, along with manufacturing costs.
Canadian sales of Smart vehicles fell 6.3% to just 345 units in 2018. U.S. Smart sales plunged 58% in 2018 to 1,276 cars. That was the same year Smart went full electric in both markets.
Daimler will continue to provide owners of gasoline-powered and electric Smart ForTwo models with access to service and replacement parts via Smart and authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers.
