Madam Secretary’s upcoming sixth season will be its last, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl confirmed Wednesday. The story of Secretary Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni) will wrap with a short 10-episode season.
“We liked to be able to do this, to send the show off with a great deal of respect and celebration,” Kahl said.
Madam Secretary is CBS’ lowest-rated scripted series, but has continued to stay on the schedule thanks to syndication and streaming deals. It’s one of two long-running CBS dramas ending with shortened seasons in 2019-20, with Criminal Minds returning for a fifteenth and final season at midseason. Other broadcast series announced as ending next season include Fox’s Empire, ABC’s Modern Family, NBC’s Blindspot, and The CW’s Supernatural and Arrow.
Season 6 will likely follow Elizabeth’s experience running for president, as she announced her candidacy in the closing moments of Season 5. Madam Secretary Season 6 will air Sundays at 10/9c on CBS.
