Oscar-winner Tom Hanks is set to star in a new Paramount Pictures and Mattel Films feature based on the action figure Major Matt Mason.
Mason is an astronaut who lives and works on the moon, and deals with both a space crew and various alien allies and villains. Akiva Goldsman (“Angels & Demons”) will adapt the script from a short story about the character from Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon.
A 3D CG animated film based on the toy series was announced in 2011 with Hanks and Graham Yost co-writing the script. Attempts were made to get Robert Zemeckis to direct that film but ultimately the project never panned out.
Hanks is currently promoting A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at TIFF in Toronto while Chabon is serving as showrunner of the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series.
