Universal has picked up an option on the 1970s martial arts western television series Kung Fu and has attached David Leitch (Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2) to direct.
David Carradine starred in the original series which ran on ABC from 1972 to 1975 and followed Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who came to the American West in search of his half brother.
The series included flashbacks to Caine’s training as a teenager. Kelly McCormick and Leitch are producing, while original series creator Ed Spielman executive produces.
The project is separate from a TV version in development at The CW which would have an Asian-American woman in the lead.
