Moviefone, the U.S. based movie listing service that began in 1989, is effectively no longer as its parent company Helios & Matheson Analytics have declared it bankrupt. Moviefone was a go-to telephone service for movie showtimes in the 1990s.
Helios & Matheson, who also own the ill-fated MoviePass, acquired the entertainment brand in April 2018 and it remains one of their most valuable properties – making up a sizeable portion of the company’s $10 million assets.
AOL bought Moviefone in a stock-only deal for nearly $400 million in 1999, right before the dotcom bubble burst. Now it’s reportedly worth only 1.1% of its former valuation ($4.38 million) and is all but closed down – with just one employee left to run the service.
