Hitachi’s G-Technology sub today unveiled what it believes is the world’s thinnest external hard drive, the G-Drive Slim. The portable storage uses the already very thin Travelstar Z5K320 320GB drive to make an enclosure that’s just 9.9mm (0.39in) tall and weighs just five ounces. G-Technology Thinks of the drive as the ideal companion drive for a MacBook Air due to its size and the aluminum case that matches the new MacBook Air.
The drive itself is shock-protected, and the aluminum shell acts as a passive heat sink that keeps it cool without having to use active cooling. It comes powered entirely off of the USB 2.0 port and is already pre-formatted for Macs.
Price and Availability
Just the one capacity is available for the Slim, 320GB, and costs $99.99. The drive is covered by a three-year limited warranty. Sales start today both online and at Apple’s retail stores.
