Toshiba Storage Device Division has introduced its MKxx39GS series 1.8-inch spinning platter drives with SATA connectors. This gives the drives a 10 percent smaller footprint when compared to standard 1.8-inch drives, allowing the drive to be used in a wider range of applications. Intended uses include tablets, netbooks, and compact external drives. The new drives come in three capacities at 160GB, 200GB and 220GB.
The Toshiba MKxx39GS series incorporate a 16MB buffer and can withstand mobile applications, tolerating up to 1,500Gs of non-operational shock and 600Gs of operational shock. They are also designed for quiet operation operating at 14dB at idle and 15dB at seek and sip only 0.35 Watts of power at low idle making them the lowest power consuming SATA drive currently on the market.
The first shipping samples will be available to OEM partners in February.
