Microsoft Gave some launch for Internet Explorer 9 today. Team member Ryan Gavin said the browser reached 2.35 million downloads in the first 24 hours of the release version being online. The number was twice as quick as for the original beta and four times those of the release candidate.
It amounted to about 27 downloads every second, Gavin said for context.
Microsoft has declined in web browsers share to have just over half of the market world wide. About a third of its total market share belongs to users who are still running a version of Internet Explorer at least two versions back, and most of those older users are still using IE6 on computers too old to use IE9. Microsoft has an active campaign to get people to upgrade from IE 6.
IE9 has been welcomed by many for being the first version of the browser to truly honor web standards and pushing forward with new technologies like HTML5.
