Intel Updates Wireless Display 2.0 to Support Blu-ray

Intel has updated its Wireless Display 2.0 (WiDi 2.0) standard this week to support wireless streaming playback of HDCP copy-protected content. This includes Intel Insider, DVD and Blu-ray movies at up to 1080p. Users with the latest Sandy Bridge-era Core processors can update their HD Graphics drivers to see the change.

Before this update, WiDi would only play content from streaming video sites or locally stored videos. An adapter remains a requirement, however.

Other, detail new features include a unified 32-/64-bit installer using a single file. It supports 802.11n Wi-Fi at 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Audio can pipe out across six channels at 16-bit and 48kHz. Latency has been reduced to under 300ms to keep the responses more instantaneous, and WiDi can now detect ISDB-T and ISDB-S TV tuners.
