Music streaming service Rdio has released a new aid for developers, the Mobile Playback API for iOS and Android. The code should allow the creation of third-party apps which can play Rdio content, including access to playlists and charts. Its functionality is similar to that of the Rdio Web Playback API, which was announced in March during South by Southwest in Austin.
Verizon, meanwhile, has announced availability of the official Rdio app through V CAST. The main advantage is simply billing, as a paid Rdio subscription becomes attached to a monthly phone bill. The only subscription option which works with smartphones is Rdio Unlimited, which costs $10 a month; this does however let people cache music on a device for offline listening.
The V CAST version of Rdio is available on “select” Android phones, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
