Sony and Rockstar quickly countered a rumor Thursday with a joint statement denying that LA Noire was overheating consoles. Following since-removed comments from Rockstar’s support, the two said that neither the open-world game nor the PS3 3.61 firmware was leading either to just excess heat or full system shutdowns. They didn’t have an answer for those who had complained about lockups.
An early scan of those complaining of problems suggests it may be due to the age of the systems. Many of those complaining are using launch-era PS3s, which were built on hotter-running processors and more likely to overheat during hours-long play sessions. The PSN outage may have also played a role since systems might have been idle for the weeks since it began and faced added stress from weeks of inactivity.
