Motorola Xoom may be given an unexpected upgrade to Android 3.2 soon based on the comments of a Google staffer at the official Android Open Source Project discussions. When addressing problems with Exchange after Android 3.1, the employee anticipated an update “within days” that would fix the issue for Xoom owners. He didn’t say what else would come with the patch.
The 3.2 upgrade is thought to be a stopgap that lets seven-inch tablet designers get the Android 3 interface without having to wait for Ice Cream Sandwich to bring it to every Android device. Google may see a smaller update of the kind as an opportunity to roll in fixes that otherwise would have had to arrive in smaller, device-specific updates.
Google’s scheduling could see the Xoom preempt the Huawei MediaPad as the first Android 3.2-ready tablet. Motorola’s slate was the inaugural Android 3 design and is still treated as Google’s reference model, although it was beaten to 3.1 by Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1
