The Kindle licensing deal Microsoft and Amazon made last year does not extend to the recently introduced and Android-powered Kindle Fire, BGR learned. This could mean Amazon will be on the hook for licensing fees to Microsoft. “Our agreement does not cover Android tablets,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.
Microsoft would not comment on what, if any, further action it may take against Amazon and the Kindle Fire. It may strike a similar deal to those it has with HTC and Samsung involving Android-powered devices.
Between all of its license deals, Microsoft is estimated to make $444 million in profits on Android in its current fiscal year, more than it will make on Windows Phone.
Microsoft maintains every current Android device infringes on its patents.
