Boxee gave owners of the Boxee Box a reward for the weekend on Friday with the addition of Spotify streaming. Those who pay the $10 monthly subscription for Spotify Premium can listen to any track in the catalog and get access to their playlists. The Boxee app is optimized for the TV-sized interface and doesn’t have the social features, but it does have the song sharing inbox.
The app is free apart from the Premium subscription and is in Boxee’s on-device app store. Boxee hasn’t said if the desktop apps will get similar access.
Boxee has made a point of a wide app ecosystem, but its efforts have mostly focused on video and social networking apps, not audio. Spotify is increasingly one of the most popular services in the US and fills a considerable gap while also catering to Europeans.
