Sony Limits PS3 and PSP Game Activations

Sony on Friday outlined a plan to curb the number of devices that can use a game. Any PlayStation Store game for the PS3 or PSP bought after November 18 will be limited to two activations at a time for each device type, down from the current five. Gamers will have to turn activations on or off either on the devices themselves or on the web.

Sony hasn’t said if PSP restrictions will be the same as or separate from the PlayStation Vita, although it won’t be available until the end of the year for Japan and February 22 for North America and Europe.

The company didn’t explain the decision, but it’s most likely to curb abuse of the activation limit. It’s unofficially but widely acknowledged that some gamers share their PlayStation Network sign-ins to let their friends play the same game without having to buy an extra copy. Its current limit would mostly keep the sharing to personal or family hardware.
