Time Warner Cable confirmed this morning that it had suffered an unusual, national-level Internet outage. Although lasting just minutes, users across the country, including in Austin, New York, and Kansas City, all found themselves unable to get online. The company didn’t yet have an explanation for what had happened.
National-level issues can have multiple causes but are usually tied to central servers. The potential reasons could include DNS (domain name service) servers preventing users from visiting regular web addresses as well as central routing issues, among others.
Most Internet outages are regional in nature based on the failures of just local servers or network infrastructure.
