Microsoft’s Xbox Live programming director Larry Hryb warned Tuesday that the Xbox 360 fall 2011 Dashboard update, due to have gone live at 10AM Eastern, had been “slightly delayed.” He didn’t have extra information and only expected more information until sometime “later today,” hinting at at least several hours’ more waiting.
The update is the most ambitious Microsoft has planned for the Xbox 360 in its six-year history. A complete interface remake based around Windows Phone-style tiles is the centerpiece, but it will also have a very heavy live and on-demand video component with many cable and satellite providers, TV networks, and on-demand video services signing on. Media as a whole is more important with dedicated sections and a full app platform for those and social networks.
The scale of the launch may play a role. Although only some services will be available during launch week, Microsoft is coordinating services across dozens of countries and starting up some services across several at a time.
