Medium Format Camera Makers Mamiya, Leaf Merge

Mamiya Digital Imaging and Leaf Imaging, makers of medium-photography cameras, have merged. The new company, Mamiya Leaf, will combine their resources to develop new products. Before this, both companies produced devices controlled by Phase One digital backs.

Mamiya makes camera bodies and lenses, while Leaf makes camera bodies and digital backs. Competing companies, however, such as Hasselblad and Pentax, build medium-format cameras with image sensors integrated into them. With traditional digital SLRs also becoming more advanced and upping their megapixel counts closer to those of medium-format cameras, the Mamiya and Leaf merger should help the two companies compete better.

The increased research and development that will come from the merger will result in more powerful products, Leaf general manager Dov Kalinksi said.
